Core Curriculum: English

Over the four years in Sixth Form students will have the opportunity to work towards one or more of the following qualifications:

English GCSE

Students will follow a GCSE syllabus with the opportunity of gaining accreditation at the end of two years. Students will read and respond to a range of literary works, both contemporary and historical, and have the opportunity to experience diverse texts pertinent to modern life. They will write for a variety of purposes and audiences and this will include the opportunity to develop both their functional skills and creativity.

Functional Skills English

Students will have the opportunity to study a range of qualifications that will help to prepare them for life after school. We will follow the Edexcel Functional Skills English courses at Entry Level, Level 1 and Level 2, depending on student need and ability. Within these qualifications, students will have the opportunity to read and respond to texts from real-life situations and will develop their writing and speaking and listening skills in contemporary and relevant situations.

We will also consider other qualifications dependent on student experience and need. This could include GCSE Literature. Students also have opportunities to improve their English skills through the use of online learning programmes that they can access from home and school such as Lexia.
